About Smestow
A hidden oasis in the heart of the city, Smestow Valley is Wolverhampton’s first designated nature reserve and a haven for wildlife.
Smestow Valley Local Nature Reserve (SVLNR) follows the natural valley of Smestow Brook alongside the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal forming a green corridor covering 51 hectares (120 acres) and approximately 4.5 kilometres long.
The canal towpath and the old railway line cross each other forming a ‘figure of eight’ loop and, along with the other paths, meadows and woodland within SVLNR, provide opportunities for a range of health and leisure activities such as walking, running, cycling, canoeing, spotting wildlife and photography.
Come and enjoy the great outdoors in the heart of the city! Our visitors enjoy this calm oasis, taking in the landscape with its’ distinctive heritage features being reclaimed by nature.
